Épisode Nouvelles vies S03E01 - One Tree Hill Saison 3

Flash-Back (trois mois plus-tôt)

L' épisode commence au Scott Motors où il y a le feu. On voit un maillot de basket (celui de Dan avec écrit dessus SCOTT et le numéro 33) brûler ainsi qu'une photo de famille avec Deb Nathan et Dan. Dan assis, inconscient, sur son fauteuil entouré de flammes. Soudain il y a une grosse explosion...

Chez Deb et Dan, Nathan arrive et dépose ses valises sur le pas de la porte. Sa mère arrive en courant, heureuse de le voir. Elle lui dit qu'elle était seule toute la nuit et elle lui promet que bientôt ils seront libres. Le téléphone sonne. Nathan lui dit qu'il doit partir qu'il a quelque chose à faire, il dit au revoir à sa mère mais quand il ouvre la porte, Haley se trouve dehors. Étonné, il lui demande ce qu'elle fait ici mais Deb arrive et dit que c'est urgent, qu'il y a eu le feu à la concession et qu'il faut vite y aller. Elle propose même à Haley de les suivre.

Lucas va rejoindre Peyton sur la plage. Elle a l'air triste. Lucas veut la raccompagner chez elle mais elle ne veut pas être seule et lui demande s'il peut rester avec elle.

Retour à Scott Motors où la concession brûle toujours.

Lucas a raccompagné Peyton. Elle lui avoue avoir reçu des mails d'une femme qui prétend être sa mère. Le problème c'est qu'elle a vu sa mère mourir à l'hôpital quand elle était plus jeune! Dehors une sirène se fait entendre. Lucas regarde par la fenêtre et ne dit rien. Peyton le remarque et lui demande ce qu'il a. Il lui répond que ce soir il a fait quelque chose... Peyton le regarde l'air confus.

Retour au Scott Motors où des pompiers éteignent le feu. Deb, Nathan et Haley arrivent. Un pompier vient les voir et Deb dit que son mari était à l'intérieur. Haley prend la main de Nathan. Le pompier arrive avec Dan assis dans un brancard, il n'est pas mort.

Trois mois plus tard

A l'aéroport Lucas attend, des fleurs à la main. On peut apercevoir Brooke arriver. Elle croyait qu'il était venu pour elle... mais celui-ci s'excuse en lui disant que sa mère rentre de Nouvelle-Zélande et qu'il ne pensait pas qu'elle rentrerait aujourd'hui.

Peyton est dans sa chambre et peint le chiffre 6 sur une immense affiche qui fait tout le mur représentant des gens (enfants, adultes...). Lucas arrive et lui apprend que Brooke est revenue.

Dans la chambre de Nathan, Dan a retourné toutes ses affaires à la recherche de quelque chose... Deb arrive et lui dit qu'il doit se reposer, ne pas s'agiter sinon ses brûlures vont le démanger. Dan et Deb parlent du feu, il ne se souvient de rien mais a quelques flashs qui lui reviennent de temps en temps, de plus il fait souvent des cauchemars.

Au gymnase, Nathan joue quand un de ses coéquipiers lui apporte une lettre.

Flash-Back (il y a trois mois)

Chez Nathan, Haley vient rejoindre Nathan elle lui dit qu'elle est désolée pour son père et pour leur relation, que maintenant elle reste à Tree Hill. Elle lui avoue ne jamais l'avoir oublié quand elle n'était pas là. Durant leur discussion Nathan est froid alors qu'Haley est désolée et sincère.

Maintenant

Dans l'ancienne chambre de Lucas, Brooke range ses affaires dans une valise. Lucas vient la voir et lui donne des fleurs (il les a cueillies dans le jardin du voisin...:D) Brooke dit à Lucas que leur relation doit être non- exclusive. Il lui demande alors ce qu'ils vont faire, elle lui répond s'amuser, aller au ciné... Il lui demande s'ils vont s'embrasser elle répond que oui, et plus que le baiser?? Elle lui répond "peut-être" en souriant. Elle lui rappelle qu'ils peuvent sortir avec d'autres personnes...

Flash-Back (trois mois plus-tôt)

Chez Peyton, Lucas est avec Peyton. Ils parlent de Brooke et Lucas, du fait qu'elle soit partie mais aussi de Jake qui a brisé le coeur de Peyton.

Maintenant

Chez Peyton, celle-ci continue de peindre en rouge des chiffres après le 6 c'est le 4 et le 7.

Flash-Back (trois mois plutôt)

Peyton et son père sont sur le port. Là il lui apprend que sa mère est morte mais que sa mère biologique est toujours vivante...

Flash-Back (maintenant)
Peyton est dans sa chambre, elle continue de peindre.

Dan se regarde dans un miroir, un briquet est allumé devant lui, dans son dos on peut voir d'énormes brûlures.

Haley rentre dans son appartement et découvre la peinture la représentant effacée. Elle se souvient d'une dispute entre elle et Nathan quand elle est rentrée, celui-ci lui en veut vraiment. Brooke arrive derrière elle et lui dit qu'elle a loué l'appartement! Haley n'habite plus ici!

Micro vient voir Brooke, ils parlent de Lucas et Félix. Micro apprend à Brooke que lui et Erika ne sont plus ensembles. Peyton les rejoint alors que Micro part. Les filles parlent d'Haley... Peyton lui en veut pour ce qu'elle a fait à Nathan, elles parlent aussi de la mère de Peyton.

Lucas joue au basket quand tout à coup, il s'arrête ayant très mal au coeur. Haley arrive derrière lui, il ne dit pas qu'il a mal, ils sont content de se revoir!

Peyton est dans sa chambre sur le mur, on peut voir qu'elle a peint les nombres 647081. Elle regarde ses dessins.

Flash-Back (trois mois plus-tôt)

Larry vient voir sa fille et ils parlent de sa mère.

Flash-Back (maintenant)

Deb rentre dans le café, elle est contente de revoir Karen! Elles parlent de la déco du café et de leurs vacances. Lucas arrive avec Haley, celle-ci souhaite redevenir serveuse. Elle commence tout de suite et quand elle nettoie une table, elle apperçoit le piano. Elle a alors un flash d'elle jouant et chantant a côté de Nathan. Lucas arrive avec un café et ils parlent de Nathan.

Flash-Back (trois mois plus-tôt)

Dans la nuit, Haley va voir Nathan et lui dit qu'elle l'aime. Lui aussi l'aime mais il n'a plus confiance en elle.

Flash-Back (maintenant)

Chez les Scott Deb apporte à Dan les papiers du divorce....

Au café Brooke vient voir Haley et lui dit qu'elle peut venir cohabiter avec elle! Elles se partageront le loyer. Haley est très surprise de l'offre de Brooke!

Peyton et Lucas se promènent. On apprend qu'ils ont passé l'été ensemble. Lucas apprend à Peyton que sa mère est de retour à Tree Hill.

Nathan ouvre la lettre, ce sont les papiers du divorce. Il a alors un flash..

Flash-Back (trois mois plus-tôt)

Nathan ouvre une lettre. Ce sont les papiers du divorce. On voit les signatures. Celle de haley est "I love you..."

Flash-Back (maintenant)
Chez Haley et Brooke, Haley arrive avec ses affaires à l'appartement. Brooke l'accueille.

Dan est à l'église. Il dit au prêtre qu'il y a trois mois, on a essayé de le tuer, qu'on l'a drogué. On voit des images défiler. Whitey qui le regarde méchamment, Karen qui jette une chaise sur une vitre qui s'éclate, Deb qui le giffle, Keith qui le frappe, Lucas, Nathan, Haley... Et il ajoute qu'il compte bien découvrir qui a essayé de le tuer...

A la plage, Brooke sort de l'eau.Lucas l'attend. Ils s'assoient sur une serviette. Lucas dit à Brooke que leur relation n'est pas sérieuse et lui demande quand est-ce que la partie du baiser va arriver. Brooke répond "et bien je dirais... maintenant." Lucas embrasse Brooke et pendant le baiser, celle-ci prend une photo avec son portable.

Peyton peint toujours sur son mur. Cette fois-ci, elle peint des virgules entre certains nombres ce qui donne 6,470,818,671 et elle dit "À ce moment, il y a six milliards, quatre cent soixante dix millions, huit cent dix huit mille, six cent soixante dix une personnes dans le monde."

Chez elle, Brooke imprime la photo où elle embrasse Lucas et l'affiche avec d'autres photos de garçons qui posent avec elle, ce sont ses copains de l'été. On entend la voix de Peyton dire "Some… are running scared" (certains courent effrayés..)

Pas loin de Brooke, Haley est allongée, pensive, regardant son alliance. On entend la voix de Peyton dire "Some… are coming home" (certains reviennent à la maison)

Au café Karen et Deb rangent. On entend la voix de Peyton dire "Some tell lies to make it through the day" (certains disent des mensonges pour tenir le jour )

Peyton est sur son lit regardant ses dessins. On l'entend dire "Others are just not facing the truth" (D'autres ne font pas face à la réalité)

On voit Dan sortir de l'église. On entend Peyton dire "Some are evil men, at war with good" (Certains hommes sont mauvais, en guerre avec le bien) On voit Dan dans les flammes qui tombe par terre avec un morceau de papier avec "For everything you’ve done" inscrit dessus. (pour tout ce que tu as fait)

On voit ce même papier dans les mains de Lucas.On entend la voix de Peyton dire "And some are good, struggling with evil" (Et certains sont bons, luttant avec le mal) On voit Nathan dans les vestiaires, Micro, Brooke et Haley sortir de leur chambre.

On entend Peyton dire "Six billion people in the world" (Six milliards de personnes dans le monde) On voit Lucas qui sourit. On entend Peyton dire "six billion souls" (six milliards d'âmes) On voit une porte s'ouvrir sur Haley.On entend Peyton dire "And sometimes" (Et parfois) On voit Nathan mettre une chaine avec sa bague comme pendentif et on entend Peyton dire "All you need is one" (On n'en a besoin que d'une) L'épisode s'achève sur le mur de Peyton.

L’épisode s’ouvre sur la concession en feu. Nathan arrive chez sa mère et dépose ses valises. Deb arrive vers lui.

Deb : Oh ! Nathan. J’ai passé la soirée à t’attendre.
Nathan : J’avais des choses à faire. Deb le prend dans ses bras.
Deb : Je sais que c’est dur pour toi mais je te promets une chose, on sera bientôt libre.
Nathan : Je sais maman. Le téléphone sonne et Deb va répondre. Quelqu’un frappe à la porte et Nathan va ouvrir ; c’est Haley.
Haley : Salut !
Nathan : Qu’est-ce que tu fais là ?
Haley :J’ai envi de revenir
Nathan : Ah ! Deb arrive derrière Nathan.
Deb (à Nathan) : Tu viens, il faut qu’on y aille.
Nathan : Qu’est-ce qui se passe ?
Deb : C’est grave. C’est ton père. Il faut qu’on parte tout de suite.
Nathan (à Haley) : Désolé.
Deb (se tournant vers Haley) : Haley ! Viens avec nous. 
Tous les 3 montent dans la voiture.On voit la concession en flammes.

Lucas rejoint Peyton sur la plage.

Lucas : Cet été on se retrouve seul tous les 2. Peyton lui fait un signe de la tête confirmant ses dires et elle se blottit dans les bras de Lucas.
Lucas : Qu’est-ce qui se passe ? Allez viens, je te reconduis chez toi.
Peyton : Non, j’arrive pas à rester toute seule. Tu resterais avec moi ?

La concession en flammes

Peyton arrive dans sa chambre suivit par Lucas.

Lucas : Bon, il faut que tu m’expliques. Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas ?
Peyton : J’arrête pas d’avoir des e-mails effrayants et surtout, ce soir, il y a une femme qui est venue chez moi et elle savait un tas de choses sur moi.
Lucas : Quel genre de choses ?
Peyton : Elle disait qu’elle était ma mère ! Ma mère elle est morte, je l’ai vu, j’étais à l’hôpital. Elle est morte devant moi. Des sirènes retentissent dans la rue ce qui bloque Lucas.
Peyton : Quoi ?
Lucas : Ce soir, j’ai fait quelque chose Peyton et je regrette de l’avoir fait…

La concession est toujours en flammes et les pompiers essaient d’éteindre le feu.Deb, Nathan et Haley arrivent.

Deb (à Nathan) : C’est à ton père le 4x4. 
Nathan et Haley se prennent la main.
Pompiers : Mme SCOTT ?
Deb : Mon mari est à l’intérieur.
Pompier : On ne vous a rien dit ? Bon, attendez ici. Il repart. Capitaine, Mme SCOTT est là ! Dan arrive sur un brancard avec un respirateur.

« Trois mois plus tard » Aéroport. 

Lucas attend quelqu’un avec un bouquet de fleurs à la main. A ce moment, Brooke arrive. Elle rentre de Californie.

Brooke : Bon d’accord. Si on considère le fait que je suis encore assez mignonne alors que je viens quand même de passer une journée de 12heures à bord d’un avion, je ne comprend pas pourquoi tu serais venu m’attendre avec un bouquet de fleurs et un magnifique bronzage de fin de vacances sachant la façon dont les choses se sont terminées… 

Brooke se retourne et voit Karen.

Brooke : … Il y a 3 mois. Je vois.
Lucas : Non, je suis venu chercher ma mère qui revient de Nouvelle-Zélande. Je croyais que toi, tu ne devais arriver que demain…
Brooke : Bah ! Tu t’es gourré ! Regardes, il y a mon taxi qui m’attends. Vite ! Tu as peut être le temps de me dire que tu m’aimes ! 

Elle s’en va et Karen arrive.

Karen : Bonjour chéri ! Lucas lui offre les fleurs et elle le prend dans ses bras.
Lucas : Bienvenue Maman ! T’as pas raté grand chose.

Chambre de Peyton.  

Peyton est entrain de peindre le chiffre 6 sur son mur lorsque Lucas arrive.

Lucas : Tu t’y mets enfin ? Je savais que t’arriverais pas à laisser passer l’été sans faire quelque chose ici !
Peyton : Qu’est-ce que tu me fais ? Tu me connais pas ?
Lucas : Je crois que si au contraire ! 

Peyton le prend dans ses bras.

Peyton : D’accord ! Je vais te dire un truc Tom SAWYER. Si t’as de la chance, j’accepterai de te laisser m’aider et si tu as beaucoup de chance, j’accepterai que tu me files du fric pour m’aider ! Qu’est-ce que t’en dis ? 

Lucas regarde le dessin du triangle amoureux.

Lucas : Brooke est là. Je suis allée chercher maman à l’aéroport ce matin et pouf, je suis tombé sur Brooke !
Peyton : Pouf ?
Lucas : Pouf !
Peyton : Qu’est-ce que tu vas lui dire ?

Chez les SCOTT. 

Dan cherche quelque chose dans la chambre de Nathan. Deb arrive dans l’embrasure de la porte.

Deb : Tu ne vas pas recommencer ? Combien de fois as-tu retourné la chambre de Nathan de fond en comble depuis 3 mois ?
Dan : Cette annulation doit bien être quelque part ? 

Dan se gratte.

Deb : Dan, tu sais que le médecin t’a dit que le fait de t’énerver ça allait forcément raviver la démangeaison des brûlures. Est-ce que c’est vraiment au sujet de la concession que tu la cherches ? Elle est bientôt reconstruite, tu vas reprendre ton travail d’ici peu. T’as pas l’impression que ça peut raviver de mauvais souvenirs ? 
(Flash back de Dan)  
Dan : J’ai rêvé cette nuit. J’étais dans mon bureau, tout était normal et mon bras était en feu. 

Deb s’avance vers lui.

Deb : Et tu ne sais toujours pas comment ça c’est produit ?
Dan : Je buvais un verre, je me suis évanouie et je me suis retrouvé dehors. A côté, c’était l’enfer mais entre les 2, c’est noir…
Deb : Je suppose que notre instinct de survie est bien plus fort qu’on ne le croit. Enfin, Nathan va bientôt rentrer à la maison.
Dan : Mais quelle maison ? Celle-ci ou celle d’Haley ?

Camp High Flyers 

Nathan s’entraîne et un de ses coéquipiers s’avance vers lui.

Mec : Hey Nathan ! T’as une lettre mec!
Nathan : Une lettre ? De qui ?
Mec : J’en sais rien mais qui que ce soit, elle sent bon ! Il lui donne la lettre et lui pique le ballon, fais un double pas et va marquer un panier. Il revient vers Nathan. Il vaut mieux pour toi que je ne la rencontre pas ! Il lui redonne le ballon.  

(Flash Back)

Nathan est dans sa chambre et il regarde par la fenêtre. Haley arrive.

Haley : Hey ! Je viens d’avoir ta mère au téléphone. Elle dit qu’elle passe la nuit à l’hôpital avec ton père.
Nathan : Incroyable ! Ils vont faire des prix à la famille SCOTT !
Haley : Je suis désolée Nathan…
Nathan : Pour mon père ou pour nous ?
Haley : Pour tout je dirai.
Nathan : Alors qu’est-ce que t’es venu faire ? Un p’tit tour en ville ?
Haley : Non. Il voulait que je me mette à travailler en solo, que j’enregistre un disque ou je ne sais quoi mais je n’en voyais pas l’intérêt sans toi. Plus rien n’a d’intérêt sans toi. J’ai fais pas mal d’erreur, je le sais…
Nathan : …tu peux le dire mais si tu as quitté la tournée pour moi, t’en a fais une autre parce que je pars demain matin. Je pars à High Flyers.
Haley : Ah ! C’est bien. Oui tu as raison. Je trouve que tu mérites de pouvoir faire ce qui te plait.
Nathan : Bon écoutes ! Il n’y a plus d’appartement et j’ai mis toutes tes affaires au garde meuble alors tu peux passer la nuit dans la chambre d’amis si tu veux.
Haley : Nathan, je n’ai pas passé une seule minute pendant la tourné sans que mon cœur ne soit avec toi à Tree Hill !
Nathan : C’est bien. Moi je pars quand même demain à la différence que moi j’emmène mon cœur avec moi !

Chambre de Lucas.
 

Brooke est dans la chambre de Lucas et elle range ses affaires. A ce moment, Lucas arrive.

Lucas : Tu veux bien me voir ?
Brooke : Oui. 

Lucas entre.

Lucas (lui tendant un bouquet de fleurs) : Alors je t’ai apporté des fleurs !
Brooke : Oh ! Elles sont très jolies. Où est-ce que tu les a eu ?
Lucas : Dans le jardin du voisin !
Brooke : Je te demande pardon pour l’aéroport tout à l’heure…
Lucas : Oh ! C’est rien et …
Brooke : Non, j’ai vraiment été idiote de tirer des conclusions aussi hâtives. Enfin, oui, j’étais jalouse de voir que t’étais pas venu pour moi. Je suis contente de te retrouver. Elle le prend dans ses bras. Comment tu vas ? 

(Flash Back)

Brooke et Lucas s’embrassent.

Brooke : C’est pas vraiment un baiser d’adieu ça ?
Lucas : Reste avec moi Brooke !
(Fin) 

Lucas : Oui, je sais que c’était pas sympa d’être là et de te dire que j’avais envi d’être avec toi alors que tu avais un taxi qui t’attendais dehors mais j’avais l’impression que t’allais m’échapper et j’ai paniqué.
Brooke : Pas grave… C’est oublié… Je t’assure. J’ai d’ailleurs eu tout l’été pour y repenser et je me suis dit qu’on pouvait tout à fait s’accorder des vacances de folie jusqu’à l’automne de façon non exclusive.
Lucas : Non exclusive ? Ça veut dire quoi ?
Brooke : Et bien, on traîne ensemble, on va au cinéma, enfin on se marre !Lucas : On s’embrassera ?
Brooke : Tu parles, on va se gêner !
Lucas : Et est-ce qu’on fera plus que ça ?
Brooke : Bah… Peut être… Mais on pourra aussi sortir avec d’autres. Qu’est-ce que t’en dis ?
Lucas : La seule chose que j’en dis c’est que tu es géniale !
Brooke : Ah ! Parce que c’est seulement maintenant que tu t’en aperçois ? Tu m’as manqué Lucas SCOTT !
Lucas : Tu m’as manqué aussi Brooke.
Brooke : Tu m’appelles tout à l’heure. Je dois aller affronter Peyton et son fameux numéro de « je suis ta mère » !
Lucas : Mouais… C’est pas une partie de plaisir.
Brooke : J’en ai pas l’impression. Tu vois, tu te tires pendant 2 mois et au retour, tu as un paquet de mères folles qui débarquent et tout un tas d’autres trucs que tu ignores. 

Brooke s’en va.

(Flash Back)

Chambre de Peyton.Peyton est allongée sur son lit et Lucas est assis sur un chaise devant l’ordinateur.

Peyton : J’ai entendu du bruit.
Lucas : Peyton, j’ai fermé toutes les portes et j’ai rien entendu. Tout va bien, tu crains rien.
Peyton : Au fait, Brooke a dit que tu avais conservé des trucs de l’époque où on était disons, peu importe ce qu’on était. Elle croit que tu tiens encore à moi.
Lucas : Aujourd’hui, j’ai dis à Brooke que je voulais être avec elle avant qu’elle parte.
Peyton (se relève en rigolant) : Tu sais ce que tu veux !
Lucas : Oui, je suis un vrai malade ! Nan mais à chaque fois où je me mets à réfléchir, il y a tout un tas de flashes qui pètent dans ma tête et ça me dit LA FERME, LA FERME.
Peyton : Ouais… C’est vrai que ou t’en dis trop ou comme par exemple pour Jake et moi, t’en dis pas assez et tout fou le camp.
Lucas : Ouais… Je suis désolé pour Jake.
Peyton : Ouais… Moi aussi. Ça m’a fait mal.
Lucas : ça a été une année difficile niveau cœur. Ce qui est dommage c’est qu’il faut qu’on soit désespéré tous les 2 pour se retrouver.
Peyton : Non. On s’est pas retrouvé, on ne s’est jamais perdu. Mais je suis contente que tu sois là quand même. C’est vrai que pendant quelques temps, on s’est perdu de vue mais aujourd’hui, on refait surface d’autant plus si on considère ce qu’on a vécu.
Lucas : Dis-moi que ça dominera tout le reste, toi et moi ?
(Fin) 

Peyton continue de peindre des chiffres sur son murs.

(Flash Back)

Peyton est au port et son père s’avance vers elle.

M. SAWYER : Ca va ma chérie ?
Peyton : C’est la vérité ?
M. SAWYER : Bon, écoutes.
Peyton : Non papa. T’as dis que tu voulais qu’on en parle face à face et bien on est face à face. Alors cette femme est ma mère ?
M. SAWYER : Tu sais bien que ta mère nous a quitté Peyton ! Elle est morte mais ta mère biologique, elle, est toujours vivante.

Dan est dans sa salle de bain est allume un briquet.
Deb regarde un album photo et sort un enveloppe.

(Flash Back)

Peyton dessine devant la tombe de sa mère. Son père est debout à ses côtés avec  un bouquet de fleurs dans la main.

M. SAWYER : Je n’ai jamais connu ton père. Elle est la seule que je connaisse et on lui a dit de n’avoir aucun contact avec toi sauf si tu le demandais. Il s’assied. J’avoue que parfois il m’est difficile de te regarder sans voir ta maman. Tu lui ressembles tellement ces derniers temps. 

Peyton tend un dessin à son père.

Peyton : En quoi je tiens d’elle, si ce n’est que je mens comme elle ? 

Peyton part.

(Fin)

Haley arrive dans son ancien appartement avec ses affaires et elle voit la fresque de Nathan au mur.

(Flash Back)Chez les SCOTT. 

Nathan arrive dans la chambre d’ami.

Nathan : Je suis venu voir si t’avais besoin de rien.
Haley : A part toi tu veux dire ? Désolée. Je suis pas sympa. C’est vraiment bizarre tu sais Nathan. J’aurais pu appeler Peyton, Lucas ou n’importe qui.
Nathan : Non attends. Il est déjà tard et puis, qu’est-ce que ça aurait changé ? Tu te retrouves toujours dans le noir si tu éteins la lumière !
Haley : Nathan, tu sais, quand tu as pris cette drogue avant le match et que tu t’es effondré, tu as fais une erreur mais je sais que tu t’es promis que si tu avais une seconde chance, tu ferais les choses différemment. Je t’ai fais du mal, j’en suis sure mais moi je m’étais promis, que si j’arrivais à capter ton attention, de t’avouer qu’au cours de cette tournée il ne s’était passé aucun jour sans que je me sois dis que le temps passé avec toi avait été le meilleur que j’avais vécu.
Nathan : T’as pas le droit de dire ça ! Pas après 3 mois de silence !
Haley : Pourquoi si c’est la vérité ?
Nathan : Bah voyons !
Haley : Je te le jure.
Nathan : T’as oublié le jour où t’as signé les papiers d’annulation?
Haley : C’est papiers, c’est toi qui en était l’initiateur.
Nathan : Oui ! Après avoir fait 1500 km pour te voir et que tu n’ai même pas dénier me rappeler quand je suis parti ce qui aurait pu m’inciter à rester.
Haley : Attends, c’est toi qui t’es enfui comme un voleur !
Nathan : Qu’est-ce que tu voulais que je fasse ?
Haley : Je t’ai téléphoné.
Nathan : Oui, tu l’as fais sur le répondeur. Quel intérêt ?
Haley : Je savais que de toute façon tu m’aurais raccroché au nez et que je voulais absolument te laisser un message.
Nathan : Message que je n’ai pas écouté et que j’ai effacé.
Haley : Bien ! Alors tu vas aussi effacer ça. J’ai eu un comportement de gamine en m’éloignant de toi pendant la tournée. Tu m’avais donné un ultimatum le soir où je suis partie et moi, je me suis défendu pour de mauvaises raisons. Je suis têtue, je le sais bien. L’ennui, c’est qu’aujourd’hui, je ne peux plus rattraper ce que j’ai fais. Je voulais faire cette tournée. J’en avais très envi, j’en rêvais toutes les nuits mais il y a une chose que je voudrais que tu saches. Il ne sais jamais passé un soir où j’ai plus aimé cette tournée que je ne t’ai aimé.

Brooke arrive derrière Haley.

Brooke : Plutôt agressif, hein ?
Haley : Ouais… Je croyais qu’après 3 mois ça aurait disparu.
Brooke : Nan, ça s’effacera jamais.
Haley : J’imagine que tu sais que Nathan n’est plus là ? Il a déménagé avant de partir pour son stage.
Brooke : Je suis au courant. Alors bienvenue. Je suppose que tu ne vas pas rester là ?
Haley : Si je reste !
Brooke : Oh ! Tu peux rester mais tu ne resteras pas là. Je viens de louer cet appart’. Pour moi. 

Brooke la laisse seule.

Chez Brooke.

Brooke s’installe avec l’aide de Micro. Elle est entrain d’accrocher des photos sur le mur.Micro arrive avec pleins de cartons sur les bras.

Brooke : Micro ? Elle lui enlève les cartons des bras.
Micro : Je me sens fragile. Je me sens pas utilisé à ma juste valeur.
Brooke : Ouais. Enfin, tu compenses. Qui aurait cru que tu pouvais t’occuper de ces gros cartons tout seul !
Micro : Ouais, qui l’aurait cru ?
Brooke : Tiens. Elle lui tend une canette de soda.
Micro : Merci. Il regarde son mur. C’est à cause d’un de ces mecs que tu ne veux plus sortir avec Lucas ?
Brooke : Non ! Je sors encore avec lui mais pas de façon exclusive.
Micro : C’est un peu comme avec Félix !
Brooke : Pas du tout. Félix, lui c’était purement physique. C’est beaucoup plus romantique avec Lucas.
Micro : Mais tu ne veux pas t’engager avec lui ?
Brooke : Non ! Beaucoup trop de problèmes !
Micro : C’est drôle tu vois. Quand j’étais avec Erika, j’aurai pu déplacer des montagnes. Et je ferais tout pour retrouver cette époque.
Brooke : Tous les 2 vous n’êtes plus ensemble ?
Micro : Non
Brooke : Pourquoi ? Qu’est-ce qui c’est passé ?
Micro : Elle est devenue populaire.
Brooke : Tu vois, ça illustre exactement ce que je te disais finalement. Je trouve que c’est beaucoup mieux de pouvoir batifoler. 
A l’extérieur, Peyton appelle Brooke : Davis !
Brooke : Allez, on y va ! 

Dans le salon.

Peyton : Bien joué !
Micro : Comment ça ?
Peyton : Brooke a à peine récupérer la place que je te retrouve dans sa chambre !
Brooke : Oh ! T’es insinuation douteuses tu te les gardes Peyton !
Micro : Je crois que je vais aller chercher le reste.
Brooke : Oh ! Tu te fais le sofa. Se sera très sympa.
Micro : Ouais. Il sort de l’appartement
Peyton : Et voilà, je rejoue la scène à l’envers. Moi j’ai viré toutes les affaires de Nathan il y a 3 mois.
Brooke : Oui, mais cette fois ça va être nettement mieux parce qu’ici, ça va être notre nouveau petit palais des 1001 nuits. On va juste changer le look de ce petit paradis avec un coup de peinture, quelques petits dessins que tu réalises à merveille que personne ne pige et qui fichent un peu la trouille et, un paquet de très beaux garçons.
Peyton : Tu diras encore que je fais des sous-entendus !
Brooke (regardant l’œuvre de Nathan) : La 1ère chose à faire de toute urgence, c’est de couvrir cette œuvre hideuse qui appartient à Nathan.
Peyton : Je ne suis pas d’accord. Moi, je la laisserai là.
Brooke : Nan mais arrêtes ! Faut la planquer. Haley va sûrement venir ici. J’ai pas envi qu’elle voit ça.
Peyton : Pourquoi ? C’est de sa faute si elle est là !
Brooke : Tu t’es accrochée avec elle ?
Peyton : ça dépend de qu’elle Haley tu parles. De la Haley SCOTT, une très gentille petite nana ou de Haley JAMES qui se la joue femme mûre qui a quitté la ville sans donner signe de vie parce que cette Haley là, j’ai des problèmes avec elle.
Brooke : Tu t’es jamais demandé si ça n’avait pas été difficile pour elle ? Il a fallu qu’elle réussisse à gérer son histoire avec Chris et il est possible qu’elle ai eu la trouille de risquer d’en être un peu trop amoureuse ?
Peyton : Elle aurait été trop amoureuse et elle l’aurait abandonné ? C’est surprenant !
Brooke : Attends. Tu vas peut être m’en vouloir de te dire ça mais je me demande si ton problème n’est pas moins avec Haley qu’avec le retour d’Ellie ta mère biologique.
Peyton : Nan, nan Brooke. Mon problème c’est une fille qui disparaît du jour au lendemain et qui, quand elle se repointe, voudrait bien être instantanément pardonnée. Et toi ton problème c’est que tu vas trouver personne pour ta peinture si tu continue à t’occuper de mes problèmes !
Brooke (imitant une tigresse) : Rrrrrr !
Peyton : Désolée. Je suis un peu en colère.
Brooke : Juste un p’ti peu !
Peyton : Je fais marche arrière !
Brooke : Merci. Ecoutes, tout ce que je dis moi, c’est qu’on sait toutes les 2 ce que c’est d’avoir le cœur brisé. Et Haley a peut être seulement besoin d’un coup de main, qu’on lui en veuille ou pas !

River Court 

Lucas joue au basket. Il fait une pause et il sent une douleur à son cœur. Il met une main dessus et se penche un peu en avant.

Lucas prend le dernier cachet de sa boite de médicaments.

Haley : Hey ! Ça va toi ?
Lucas : ça dépend, t’es vraiment revenue ?
Haley : On ne sais jamais ! 

Lucas la prend dans ses bras.

Lucas : Je suis content
Haley : Tu m’étrangles. 

Ils se séparent et se sourient.

Dans la chambre de Peyton 

Peyton regarde ses dessins.

(Flash Back)

Son père arrive dans sa chambre.

M. SAWYER : Ta mère n’a pas dormi pendant une semaine quand elle t’a ramenée à la maison. A chaque fois que tu toussais ou qu’elle t’entendait, elle se levait et te prenait aussitôt dans ses bras pour te rassurer. Une nuit, je l’ai un peu taquiné sur son attitude et elle m’a dit « je serais toujours là pour elle. Quoiqu’il arrive, il faut qu’elle sache que sa maman l’aime » . On avait l’intention de tout te dire ma chérie, tous les 2 mais quand elle nous a quitté, je crois que je n’ai pas voulu rajouter à ta souffrance et… je me suis senti impuissant parce que je ne pouvais pas te protéger de la perte qui te frappait. Tu vois quand je regarde ce dessin, je me dis que t’as le droit de m’en vouloir si ça peut t’aider mais surtout ne lui en veut pas à elle parce que ta maman ne t’a jamais menti. Elle t’a toujours aimé et de tout son cœur. Et cette autre femme, cette Ellie, ne changera jamais rien aux qualités que ta maman avait. Elle a su être exemplaire.

Deb entre t avance vers Karen.
Deb : Alors comment va la grande voyageuse sexy ? Elle s’approche de Karen et l’enlace.
Karen : Debbie ! Ce que je suis contente de te voir !
Deb : Qu’est-ce que tu penses de l’endroit ?
Karen : Et bien, Lucas m’avait dit que c’était différent. Il était  loin du compte ! Mais j’avoue que j’aime bien. Oui, c’est une réussite.
Deb : Oui !
Karen : Comment vas-tu ?
Deb : Oh ! Comme tu dois le savoir par mes e-mails concernant Dan ça pourrait aller mieux. Je me conduis comme une garce. Et toi ?
Karen : Moi je suis plutôt une petite malheureuse…
Deb : Oh ! Je suis désolée… Alors ça veut dire qu’Andy n’est pas rentré ?
Karen : Pas encore… Mais on verra. J’espère qu’il ne tardera pas trop. Et toi, tu as des nouvelles de Keith ?
Deb : Non, je n’en ai aucune et toi, tu en as ?
Karen : Non. 

A ce moment, Haley entre dans le café.

Haley : Est-ce qu’il est possible d’avoir quelque chose de fort ici ?
Karen (joyeuse) : Oh ! Oui dans un grand verre et je te l’offre en plus. Elle prend Haley dans ses bras. Tu m’as manqué tu sais.
Haley : A moi aussi tu m’as manqué.
Deb : Et bah moi aussi je vais prendre quelque chose de fort, un café ce sera bien ! Karen ?
Karen : Hum ? Oui, je veux bien un café moi aussi.
Haley : Moi pareil !
Karen : Qu’est-ce qui t’amène par ici belle jet-setteuse ?
Haley : Et bien, sachant que je vais avoir besoin d’argent, je suis venue te demander du travail.
Deb : oui, j’ai dis à Haley de revenir travailler au café si tu es d’accord bien sur.
Karen : Ah mais c’est évident. On est ravi qu’une grande chanteuse pop se produise dans notre café.
Haley : En fait, je suis venue chercher une place de serveuse, comme avant…
Karen : Ah ! Elle regarde derrière Haley.  Table 5 à nettoyer. Elle lui lance un torchon. On va voir si t’a toujours la main !
Haley : T’inquiète. Haley part nettoyer la table. Lucas arrive derrière elle. 

(Flash Back)

Haley chante Elsewhere à Nathan au Karen’s Café.

Lucas : Bon, on a rien d’autre alors je t’ai donné (il sent la tasse) du café.
Haley (souriant) : C’est gentil. Tu sais que j’ai chanté pour la 1ère fois ici rien que pour Nathan ?
Lucas : Tu lui as parlé depuis qu’il est parti en stage ?
Haley : Non, il ne décroche pas alors je lui écris des lettres.

Camp High Flyers. 

Nathan marque un panier lors de l’entraînement.

(Flash Back)

Haley : Tu es réveillé ?
Nathan (allongé dans son lit) : Ouais.
Haley (s’avançant vers lui) : Parles-moi s’il te plait !
Nathan : Je ne sais pas quoi te dire. Une part de moi voudrais trouver les mots justes pour te faire souffrir comme tu m’as fais souffrir.
Haley : Je souffre rassure-toi.
Nathan : Tu souffres parce que j’ai embrassé Chris ? Parce que j’ai préféré laisser tomber notre histoire et m’en aller ? Non attends, c’est toi ça !
Haley : Ca n’en finira jamais…
Nathan : Pardon ?
Haley : Non rien. Elle commence à partir.
Nathan : Pourquoi ?
Haley (s’avançant vers lui) : Nathan, je t’en supplie.
Nathan : Haley…
Haley (s’allongeant sur Nathan) : Je te demande pardon pour tout ce que j’ai fait. Ils se prennent dans les bras et Haley commence à l’embrasser.
Nathan : Haley arrêtes ! Je n’y arriverai pas. Je suis désolé. Il faut que tu t’en ailles, soit gentille. S’il te plaît… Haley se redresse.
Haley : Je comprends. C’est normal si tu ne m’aimes plus. Elle s’en va.
Nathan : Ca ne finira jamais. C’est nul tout ça. Tu sais que je t’aime toujours et c’est pour la vie mais je ne te fais plus confiance.

Dans la chambre de Nathan, Dan cherche toujours les papiers de l’annulation.
Deb : Dan !
Dan : Tu as trouvé les papiers ? Il prend l’enveloppe que Deb lui tend et l’ouvre. Ce sont nos papiers de divorce Déborah.
Deb : tu es guéri et je le suis aussi mais notre mariage ne s’arrangera pas. Il faut y mettre un terme.
Dan (s’asseyant) : Mais s’il avait pu retourner à l’endroit où tout avait commencé et tout revoir tranquillement, il aurait peut être trouver ce qu’il avait raté. Ouais, on va divorcer. Tu as l’air surprise ? Mais je pense qu’à un moment le feu fini par s’éteindre. Il se lève. Je vais aller me balader.

Karen’s Café. 

Haley est derrière le comptoir et Brooke entre et vient s’asseoir devant Haley.
Brooke : Combien pour un cœur brisé accompagné de regrets ?
Haley : Plus que tu ne l’imagines.
Brooke : Dès que tu as fini, apporte tes affaires à l’appartement.
Haley : Pourquoi ?
Brooke : Parce que tu viens habiter avec moi !
Haley : Oh ! Mais pourquoi est-ce que tu fais ça ?
Brooke : Parce qu’il faut bien que tu vives quelque part et que moi j’ai besoin de ta part du loyer pour m’acheter ma nouvelle garde-robe ! Bon, voilà comment je vois les choses. Tu viens, je suis canon. Tu ne risques pas de me piquer des garçons. Moi ça me va. Elle se lève et part.

Sur la promenade. 

Lucas et Peyton se promènent tranquillement.

Lucas : Tu te rends compte, tout l’été est passé et je n’arrive toujours pas à me faire à tes cheveux !
Peyton : Pourquoi ? Toi, t’as changé de coupe aussi et la mienne je la trouve très jolie !
Lucas : Arrêtes !
Peyton : Et puis, Ellie a toujours les cheveux long et je veux pas lui ressembler en quoi que se soit.
Lucas : Je l’ai rencontré moi une fois et… Enfin, c’était avant de savoir qui elle était. Et au fait, t’as toujours pas de ses nouvelles ?
Peyton : Aucune depuis que je lui ai claqué la porte au nez !
Lucas : Mais tu as arrêté de recevoir tous ces mails bizarre ?
Peyton : Ouais, pourquoi ?
Lucas : Elle est revenue ta fameuse Ellie. Je l’ai vu aujourd’hui.

Mec (à Nathan) : Alors mec ! J’espère que tu vas cartonner dans ce match !
Nathan : Peut être, on verra…
Mec : Peut être on verra ? Ouais, c’est ça ! Si t’es pas au top, moi je vais téléphoner à la nana qui t’a envoyé cette lettre.
Nathan : Ouais d’accord.
Mec : Tu vas voir. Il commence à partir puis se retourne. Tu sais Nathan, tu ne retrouveras pas tout de suite ce que tu avais. Vas-y en douceur, donne-toi du temps et d’ici peu, t’auras mieux que ce que tu avais. D’accord ?
Nathan : Ouais.
Mec : A tout à l’heure. Il part et Nathan regarde une lettre qu’il y avait à côté de lui. 

(Flash back)

Nathan regarde les papiers d’annulation dans sa chambre à Tree Hill et voit « I love you » là où devait signer Haley.

Haley arrive à l’appartement et voit « l’œuvre » de Nathan remise en forme par Brooke ce qui la rend nostalgique. Brooke arrive.
Brooke : Bon alors voila, t’as le droit à une chambre mais pas à ma pitié et ce que tu as fais moi, j’en ai rien à fiche. A prendre ou à laisser !
Haley : Je prends.
Brooke : Parfait ! Et bien entre colloc’ ! Elles se dirigent vers la chambre.

Dans une église. 

Dan entre pour aller se confesser.
Prêtre : Par la grâce du seigneur, je vous écoute mon fils.
Dan : Ouais ça va ! Il faut que vous sachiez mon père que ce n’est pas vraiment ma tasse de thé l’église. Je n’ai jamais pratiqué la religion. Ce que vous appelez de la gentillesse, j’appelle ça de la faiblesse mais personne n’est invincible. Ça je le sais. Il a bien été crucifié votre bon Dieu, non ?
Prêtre : Qu’est-ce qui vous préoccupe mon fils ?
Dan : Ce qui me préoccupe, ce sont les fautes que j’ai commises et surtout l’insomnie qui me tient compagnie avec les regrets, les défaillances. Je ne suis pas celui que j’aurai voulu être. C’est ça qui me préoccupe.
Prêtre : Vous êtes donc venu chercher l’absolution ?
Dan : Ouais. Je suppose que c’est ça. Je veux vous demander quelque chose. Est-il possible d’obtenir le pardon pour un pêcher qu’on va commettre ?
Prêtre : Je ne vois pas ce que vous voulez dire.
Dan  (avec un montage de flash back) : C’est simple mon père. Il y a 3 mois, quelqu’un a essayé de me tuer. On m’a drogué et on m’a laissé pour mort. J’ai fais celui qui ne se rappelait pas mais en fait, j’ai commencé à reconstituer ce qui c’est passé cette nuit là et quand j’aurai découvert celui qui m’a fait ça – et je peux vous dire que c’est pour bientôt- je sens déjà qu les pêchers que je vais commettre vont être impardonnables !

Sur la plage. 

Brooke sort de l’eau et marche tranquillement vers Lucas.

Lucas : T’as pas peur d’aller nager toute seule ?
Brooke : Bah non ! Comme ça personne ne me dérange. Tu me cherchais ?
Lucas : Ouais, en un sens…
Brooke : Qu’est-ce qu’il y a ?
Lucas : Rien. Je voulais savoir si on pouvait aller traîner, manger un morceau. Enfin, quelque chose d’ordinaire…
Brooke : L’ordinaire j’adore ! On va s’asseoir ? Ils s’assoient sur une serviette.
Lucas : ça va marcher comme ça.
Brooke : Expliques toi !
Lucas : Nous deux ! Sortir ensemble et rien de sérieux.
Brooke : Moi, c’est ce qui me va et pour toi ?
Lucas : ça me va aussi, je t’assure ! Seulement, j’aimerai savoir à quel moment on va s’embrasser ?
Brooke : Ah ! Ça pourrait être maintenant si t’y vois pas d’inconvénients. Ils s’embrassent et Brooke les prend en photo.

Chambre de Peyton. 

Peyton fini de peindre son mur en mettant la dernière touche à son œuvre.

Peyton : À ce moment précis, il y a 6 470 818 671 personnes sur terre. On voit Brooke imprimer la photo de Lucas et elle puis l’accrocher sur son tableau. Certaines doivent s’inquiéter. Gros plan sur Brooke puis élargissement et on voit Haley pensive allongé sur son lit. Certaines rentrent chez elle. Haley regarde son alliance. D’autres mentent pour passer leur journée tranquille. On voit Karen et Deb au café. D’autres encore doivent affronter la vérité. Vu sur Peyton assise sur son lit. Certains sont des malfaisants en guerre contre le bien (image de Dan quittant l’église puis flash back sur l’incendie), et certains autres sont bons, ils combattre le mal. On voit Lucas dans sa chambre avec un morceau de papier dans les mains. Montage d’images avec Nathan, Mouth. Six milliards de personnes sur terre (montage d’images avec Brooke, Haley), six milliards d’âmes (Images de Lucas, Peyton puis Haley revenant à Tree Hill). Et parfois… on aurait besoin que d’une seule. On voit Nathan remettre son alliance autour de son cou. Enfin, dernier zoom sur le mur de Peyton et le chiffre 1.

[EXT. DAN SCOTT MOTORS – EVENING]

(Cut to Dan who is unconscious in his chair. There’s a beat before the fire explodes.)

(The window breaks as the fire moves through it and up into the sky.)

[EXT. SCOTT RESIDENCE (EST) – EVENING]

(Birdseye view of the entrance.)

[INT. SCOTT RESIDENCE – FRONT DOOR – EVENING]

(Nathan carries his bags into the house and pushes the door closed with his elbow. He drops the bags.)

DEB: (o.s) Oh, Nathan, I was hoping that was you(!)

(She rushes to greet him. Nathan looks up at her.)

DEB: I’ve been here alone all night.

NATHAN: (Evasively) I had… something to do.

DEB: (Beat) Oh, honey. (Hugs him.)

(She lets go of him and steps back.)

DEB: I know this is hard for you but… I promise you, we’ll be free soon.

NATHAN: (Thinking before answering honestly.) I know we will.

(Deb nods and the phone rings. She touches his arm before turning around and walking back into the living room to answer it.)

(Nathan sighs and turns around, opening the door to get the last of his bags. He stops when he sees Haley standing there.)

HALEY: (Sadly) Hi.

NATHAN: (Determinedly stoic.) What’re you doing here?

HALEY: I wanna come home, Nathan.

(Nathan scoffs disbelievingly.)

NATHAN: Yeah, this is really bad timing. Uh-

(He’s cut off as Deb rushes to the door.)

DEB: (Exiting) Nathan, we have to go.

(She walks past Haley without acknowledging her.)

NATHAN: What’s going on?

DEB: (o.s) It’s urgent. It’s your father. We have to go now.

(The camera stays on Haley’s increasingly shocked face. Nathan shuts the door behind him.)

NATHAN: (To Haley.) I’m sorry.

(He follows his mother.)

(Haley stays at the doorway, unsure of where she stands and what to do. Deb looks at her.)

DEB: Haley?

(Haley turns to her.)

DEB: Come with us.

(She looks at Haley for a beat before turning around to her car. Shot of Nathan who turns too but doesn’t argue. Haley rushes for the car.)

FADE TO:



[EXT. DAN SCOTT MOTORS – WINDOW – EVENING]

(The fire is still burning the blinds and shelves.)

FADE TO:



[EXT. THE BEACH – EVENING]

(Lucas walks down the beach and sits by Peyton.)

LUCAS: (Looking at the ocean.) Looks like it’s just you and me this summer.

(Peyton looks at him sadly and nods. She hugs him, burying her head in his shoulder, before letting go. Lucas looks at her with concern. She sniffs.)

LUCAS: Peyton, what’s wrong?

(She shakes her head and looks down, about to cry.)

LUCAS: Come on, let’s get you home.

PEYTON: (Still shaking her head.) Uh-uh. I can’t be there alone.

(Lucas looks away, unsure of what to do.)

PEYTON: (Pause) Will you stay with me?

(He looks at her, completely aware of what could happen and how bad it could possibly get.)

[EXT. DAN SCOTT MOTORS – ENTRANCE – EVENING]

(The camera pans across the front of the building before zooming in on the deafening fire.)

FADE TO:



[INT. SAWYER RESIDENCE – PEYTON’S BEDROOM – EVENING]

(Shot of Peyton’s ‘Sometimes They Come Back’ sketch before the camera pans right to the doorway. Peyton enters. Lucas walks in behind her, slowly. She is beyond distressed.)

LUCAS: Peyton, you gotta talk to me. What’s going on with you?

PEYTON: (Her back to him.) I’ve been getting these creepy e-mails lately. And then… tonight, this woman shows up… and she… knew things about me.

(Lucas moves further into the room.)

LUCAS: What kinda things?

PEYTON: (Finally turns around.) She said she’s my mother(!) (Pause) My mum’s dead, Luke. I was there in the hospital(!) I-I watched her die!

(Lucas is confused and tries to speak but is cut off by a siren out on the street, as the vehicle speeds by. Peyton follows his gaze to the window and notices his face.)

PEYTON: (Confused) What?

LUCAS: (Looking at the window.) I did something tonight, Peyton (Pause) and I can’t take it back.

(Cut between them before Lucas finally looks at her, distressed.)

(Shot of the dealership sign as it is being pelted with water. Pan down to show two firemen fighting the fire. Someone rushes past the shot which has now focussed on Deb, Nathan and Haley, rushing onto the scene looking shocked and horrified. Shot of a car near the inferno.)

DEB: (To Nathan.) It’s your father’s car. He was working late.

(Close-up of Nathan’s hand, at his side, as Haley slips hers into it and intertwines her fingers with his. Nathan looks down for a beat but doesn’t say anything. Haley continues to look ahead.)

(A fireman approaches Deb.)

FIREMAN: Mrs Scott?

DEB: My husband was inside(!)

FIREMAN: They didn’t tell you?

(Deb doesn’t answer that. The fireman nods.)

FIREMAN: Wait here.

(He turns and walks away.)

FIREMAN: (o.s) Captain, Mrs Scott’s here.

(Nathan and Haley gape as paramedics wheel Dan from the side of the ambulance. He’s hooked up to medical equipment and oxygen, looking very sooty and black, but alive. He looks at them.)

(Deb looks at Nathan who is frowning at his father. Dan breathes, very much like Darth Vader.)

[INT. NEW BRUNSWICK COUNTY AIRPORT – ARRIVALS – DAY]

(Camera pans down from the ‘welcome’ sign in the airport. ‘Three months later’ appears at the bottom of the screen.)

(Lucas is standing there with a bouquet of flowers, looking at them. He looks sideways and sees Brooke walking down with new bangs, luggage and a big smile.)

BROOKE: (Stops in front of him.) OK, putting aside the fact that I do look pretty good considering I’ve been on the plane for like a day and a half, you cannot ambush me at the airport with flowers and a… nicely tanned, end-of-summer, body, considering the way we left things… (Stops short when she sees Lucas’ frown.)

(He looks sideways and Brooke turns to look too. Karen is standing there with wavy hair and a smile.)

BROOKE: (Finishing) … three months ago. (Looks away, embarrassed. Whispers.) OK.

LUCAS: Actually, I’m just… here to pick up my mom from New Zealand. (Uncomfortable) I didn’t think you were coming in till tomorrow.

BROOKE: (Smiling stiffly.) You thought wrong. (Looks to her left.) Oh, look, there’s my cab; (Looks back at him.) quick, maybe you can tell me you love me or something(!)

(She snarks and walks off. Lucas closes his eyes, sighing. He looks at his mum and smiles, holding out the flowers.)

KAREN: (Smiles) Hi, honey. (Takes the flowers.)

(She hugs him.)

LUCAS: Welcome home, mom. (Conspiratorially) You haven’t missed a thing.

(He looks towards the entrance. Karen hesitates before looking at the entrance too, unnerved.)

[INT. SAWYER RESIDENCE – PEYTON’S BEDROOM – DAY]

(Peyton is at her wall. She is painting the number 6 on it with bright red paint. Her hair is now short and straight. Lucas enters.)

LUCAS: (Looking at it for a second.) Bout time.

(Peyton turns to him quickly.)

LUCAS: Well, I knew you couldn’t go an entire summer without doing something in here.

(Peyton puts the brush down.)

PEYTON: Whatever(!) (Puts her hand on her hip, teasing.) You don’t know me.

LUCAS: Oh, I think I do.

(She smiles and hugs him.)

PEYTON: OK, so, check it out, Tom Sawyer. (Picks up her brush and points it at him.) If you’re lucky, I might let you help me, and if you’re really lucky, I might even let you pay to help me.

(Lucas mock gasps.)

PEYTON: Whaddaya say?

(Lucas straightens and looks at her sketch of Lucas, Brooke and herself pointing rifles at her heart.)

LUCAS: Brooke’s home.

(Peyton looks at the picture. His smile falls.)

LUCAS: Went to the airport this morning to pick up my mom and ‘poof’, there was Brooke.

PEYTON: ‘Poof’?

LUCAS: (Nods) ‘Poof’.

PEYTON: Hmm. (Pause) What’re gonna tell her?

(Lucas looks at Peyton and blinks but doesn’t say a word.)

[INT. SCOTT RESIDENCE – NATHAN’S BEDROOM – DAY]

(Dan is in Nathan’s bedroom, looking through pages and books. Deb walks up and stops at the doorway.)

DEB: (Sighs) You’re not doing this again.

(He ignores her and keeps looking.)

DEB: You’ve turned Nathan’s room inside-out how many times over the last three months?

DAN: Those annulment papers gotta be here somewhere(!)

(He scratches his back.)

DEB: Dan, you know what the doctor said – getting agitated is just gonna make your burns itch.

(He stops scratching himself and glares at her, before walking around Nathan’s bed to continue looking.)

DEB: (Sighing) Isn’t this really about the dealership?

(Dan throws things off the bed and tips a box upside-down, emptying it out.)

DEB: It’s nearly rebuilt; you’ll be going to work soon.

(Dan drops the box forcefully.)

DEB: It might bring back some bad memories.

(Dan turns to look at her.)

DEB: I-I suppose o-our survival skills are more than we know.

DEB: At least Nathan will be home soon.

DAN: Which home, Deb? This one… or with Haley?

(He scratches his back again and Deb sighs.)

[INT. HIGH FLYERS – BASKETBALL COURT – DAY]

(Bird’s-eye view of the court and the people sitting around on the bleachers. The camera pans and moves down as Nathan moves into the shot, dribbling his basketball. He throws the ball and gets it into the hoop. A team-mate walks onto the court and approaches him.)

TEAM-MATE: Yo, Big Time, you got a letter, man.

NATHAN: (Stops dribbling and walks to him.) Letter? From who?

TEAM-MATE: I don’t know, but whoever it is, (Smells the letter and smiles) she smells hot. (Hands the letter over and steals Nathan’s ball.)

(He bounces it once and slams it through the hoop. He catches the ball again, walks to Nathan and gives it back.)

TEAM-MATE: You better just hope she doesn’t meet me.

(Nathan smiles and takes the ball as his team-mate walks off. He looks down at the letter. It’s addressed to him at High Flyers.)

(He opens the letter.)

[INT. SCOTT RESIDENCE – NATHAN’S BEDROOM – EVENING]

(Nathan is standing at his window with his arms crossed; looking out at the view. Haley walks to the door and knocks once. He turns.)

HALEY: Hey, that was your mom on the phone. She said she’s gonna spend the night at the hospital with your dad.

NATHAN: (Scoffs) Unbelievable. They should have a Scott family discount. (Sighs)

HALEY: (Looks down.) I’m really sorry, Nathan.

NATHAN: About my dad or about us?

HALEY: …Bout everything.

(Nathan looks away, indifferently.)

NATHAN: So, what’re you doing here anyway? Tour playing Tree Hill?

HALEY: No. They wanted me to become a… solo artist and record a record or something, but… I didn’t matter without you. None of it mattered without you.

(Nathan raises his eyebrows uncaringly.)

HALEY: (Sighs) I made a lot of mistakes, Nathan.

NATHAN: (Not giving her a chance.) That’s right… and if you left the tour for me, you made another one, coz I’m leaving in the morning; I’m going to High Flyers.

(Haley pauses as she thinks of something to say.)

HALEY: Oh(!) (Pause) Well, good. Good, you deserve it. You deserve to have whatever you want. (Smiles)

NATHAN: (Pause) Well, listen, there’s-there’s no more apartment and… I put all your stuff in storage… so you can spend the night in the guest room if you want.

(Haley nods gratefully. She’s finding it hard but turns to leave his room. She stops before she gets there and turns back.)

HALEY: Nathan, there wasn’t a moment when I was away… that my heart wasn’t with you in Tree Hill.

NATHAN: (Dispassionately) That’s great(!) (Pause) But I’m still leaving tomorrow, and unlike you, I’m taking my heart with me.

(He turns back to look out of the window. Haley doesn’t say anything.)

[INT. ROE RESIDENCE – LUCAS’ BEDROOM – DAY]

(Pan to show Brooke packing up all of the things she left in Lucas’ bedroom before she left for California. Lucas stands in the doorway and smiles.)

LUCAS: You talking to me yet?

BROOKE: (Smiles) Yeah.

LUCAS: Good. (Walks in.) And I bought you flowers. (Holds out some flowers that are obviously not store bought.)

(Brooke takes them.)

BROOKE: Oh(!) (Laughs) They’re very nice. Where did you get them?

LUCAS: Neighbour’s yard.

BROOKE: Hmm. (Nods)

(They smile at each other.)

BROOKE: Look, I’m sorry about the airport earlier.

LUCAS: Ah, it’s cool, you know.

BROOKE: No, I felt stupid for jumping to conclusions and… maybe a little jealous that you weren’t actually there for me. (Smiles)

(He smiles back.)

BROOKE: It’s good to see you, Luke.

(She hugs him.)

BROOKE: How ya been?

(Brooke breaks her kiss with Lucas and looks at him in shock.)

BROOKE: (Sad) Tell me that was a goodbye kiss.

LUCAS: I wanna be with you, Brooke.

(Brooke steps back.)

LUCAS: Look, I know it wasn’t fair, how I told you… I wanted to be with you when your cab was just parked right outside… I just… saw you slipping away and… I guess I panicked.

BROOKE: (Shrugs) It’s OK. (Smiles) Really. It is. (Lucas walks forward.) I actually had the whole summer to think about this and I thought we could totally have a summer-like fling (Takes a dress out of the closet.) just… in the fall.

(Lucas crouches by the bed as Brooke packs more of her stuff.)

BROOKE: And… non-exclusive. (Looks at him carefully.)

LUCAS: Non-exclusive. How does that work? (Stands up again.)

BROOKE: Well, we hang out, we go to movies, we have fun.

LUCAS: (Considers) Do we kiss?

BROOKE: You bet your ass we kiss. (Smiles)

LUCAS: Do we do more than kiss? (Raises his eyebrows.)

BROOKE: Maybe.

(Lucas smiles and looks away.)

BROOKE: But we also date other people. (Lucas looks back at her and she shrugs.) So, whaddaya think?

LUCAS: I kinda think… (Points at her.) you’re a genius.

BROOKE: Oh, you’re just figuring that out now, are you?

(Lucas smiles and rests his arm on his chest of drawers.)

BROOKE: I missed you, Lucas Scott.

LUCAS: And I missed you too, pretty girl.

(She smiles and zips her bag up.)

BROOKE: Call me later. (Picks her bag up.) I have to go deal with Peyton’s whole ‘I’m you mother’ scenario.

LUCAS: Right(!) (Sighs) That one’s pretty messy.

BROOKE: Yeah, so I’ve heard. (Walks to the door.) And I leave for a couple months, crazy mom starts showing up and… there’s all these things you don’t know.

(She smiles and looks back at him before exiting. He watches her.)

LUCAS: (To himself.) Yeah(!)

[INT. SAWYER RESIDENCE – PEYTON’S BEDROOM – EVENING]

(Peyton is lying on her back in bed, wide awake and tense.)

PEYTON: (Wide-eyed) Did you hear something?

LUCAS: (o.s) (Sighs) Look, Peyton, I locked all the doors, (Pause) I didn’t hear anything. You’re fine, OK?

(Lucas is sitting in a chair by her desk. Peyton sighs and looks to the other side of her room.)

PEYTON: (Evasively) So… Brooke said… you kept some of the stuff from when we were… sort of… whatever we were. (Pause) She thinks you’re still into me.

LUCAS: I told Brooke I wanted to be with her, today. (Pause) Before she left.

(There’s a beat before Peyton starts laughing. She sits up.)

PEYTON: (Nods) Nice timing.

LUCAS: (Sourly amused.) I’m a real piece of work, huh? (Shakes his head.) I mean,… every time I play it in my mind, this… idiot-light keeps flashing at me. Like… ‘shut up!’ ‘shut up(!)’.

(Peyton nods.)

PEYTON: Yeah. Yeah, you say too much or… like me with Jake, you don’t say enough… and then they’re gone.

LUCAS: Yeah. I’m sorry about Jake.

PEYTON: Yeah, me too. It broke my heart.

LUCAS: (Sighs) It’s been a tough year on hearts.

(Peyton nods.)

LUCAS: So it’s… too bad we had to be this desperate to hang out again, huh?

(She laughs.)

PEYTON: Well, we didn’t have to be, we just are.

(Lucas sighs.)

PEYTON: But, I’m glad you’re here, you know? I know we kinda lost each other for a while but… hopefully that’s over, right? Especially considering our history.

LUCAS: It’s always gonna be there, isn’t it? (Pause) You and me.

(Peyton waits for a beat before nodding.)

(Peyton finishes painting a seven onto her wall in the red paint. She looks to the side at four pictures she drew. In each picture, she gets older and her dad’s barge sails further and further away.)

(The camera zooms into them slowly before cutting back to Peyton.)

[EXT. TREE HILL – THE DOCK – DAY]

(Peyton stands at the dock and waits for her father. She turns to look at him as he walks up to her.)

LARRY: Hi, sweetheart.

PEYTON: Is it true?

LARRY: (Sighs) Honey, look.

PEYTON: You said you wanted to talk about it face-to-face, dad, so, we’re face-to-face. (Pause) Is this woman my mother?

LARRY: (Pause) Your mom… is gone, Peyton. You know that.

(Peyton looks down. Larry sighs and looks out over the sea before looking back.)

LARRY: But… you biological mother is alive.

(Peyton absorbs it before looking up at him in shock.)

(Dan stands in front of the mirror and holds a lighter, with a small flame burning, in front of him. The camera pans down to a shot his burn, showing through his tank top, on the back of his shoulder.)

(Deb is holding a picture taken during her and Dan’s wedding. There is an envelope behind it. She takes it in the other hand and looks on, determined. She looks back down at the picture.)

(Peyton’s looking down at something. She looks back up and remembers.)

[INT. CEMETERY – ANNA SAWYER’S GRAVE – DAY]

(Peyton is sitting on her mother’s grave, sketching hard. She stops when someone stops beside her. Larry is there, with flowers. Peyton doesn’t move.)

LARRY: I never knew you father. (He sets the flowers down and touches the gravestone before straightening.) We only met Ellie. We asked that she not make contact with you unless you requested it.

(He looks at her before sitting down beside her.)

LARRY: (Beat) You know, sometimes it’s hard for me to look at you without seeing your mom.

(Shot of the gravestone which reads ‘Anna Rebecca; Beloved Wife and Mother’.)

LARRY: You got so much from her in such a short time.

(Peyton is silent for a long time before shoving the pad onto his lap.)

PEYTON: What did I get from her… exactly? Other than lies(!) (She stands and walks to her car.)

(Larry looks at the sky, desolate. He looks down at the sketch. It’s of a traffic light with the caption ‘People Always Lie; mom? dad? Peyton?’ Their heads are sketched in the traffic lights.)

(Haley walks into the apartment, having just returned from the tour, and the first thing she sees is the wall with pink paint over her picture. She frowns at it and sighs.)

(Haley is still looking at the disfigured wall.)

(Haley is unpacking at the bed. Nathan enters the room and sighs.)

NATHAN: (Grudgingly) Just wanted to make sure you have everything you need.

HALEY: You mean other than you?(!) (Closes her eyes and sighs.) Sorry. That wasn’t fair.

(There’s a long pause and Haley gets more uncomfortable and Nathan looks around.)

HALEY: This is really weird, Nathan. (Sits on the bed.) You know, I can just call Peyton or Lucas or something.

NATHAN: No, Haley, it’s late. (Inhales) Besides, what’s the difference? You turn the lights out; it’s all the same darkness, right? (About to leave.)

HALEY: (Quickly) Nathan- (Sighs) You know,… you know when you took those drugs before the game… where you collapsed?

(Nathan crosses his arms and listens.)

HALEY: You made a mistake. But… I know you promised yourself that if you had a second chance, you would do things differently. (Looks down sadly.) I know that I hurt you. (Pause) But I promised myself that if I could get you to listen, um… I would tell you that… (Stands up.) there was never a day on that tour… when I didn’t think you were the best part of my life.

NATHAN: (Restrained) You can’t just say that, Haley. Not after months of silence.

HALEY: Why? It’s the truth.

NATHAN: Really?

HALEY: Yeah.

NATHAN: Well, what about the day you signed the annulment papers?

HALEY: The papers that you initiated?(!)

NATHAN: Yeah, after I drove a thousand miles to see you and you didn’t even call me after I left(!) Must have been a hell of an encore(!)

HALEY: (Disbelieving) Nathan, you just walked away!

NATHAN: Well, it beats running away.

HALEY: I did call.

NATHAN: You called our answering machine, Haley(!)

HALEY: Because I knew that you were gonna hang up on me anyway so I had to leave a message!

(Nathan shrugs.)

NATHAN: Well, I didn’t even play it. (Pause) I deleted you.

HALEY: (Sighs and looks at him.) Well,… the you deleted… this. ‘Um… I was being childish when I walked away from you for the tour. You gave me an ultimatum the night that I left and, uh,… I fought back, for all the wrong reasons… and I was being stubborn-

(Nathan raises his eyebrows and nods.)

HALEY: (Continues) -and I can’t take that back. I wish that I could. Did I wanna go – yeah. I loved it. I loved every night of it… but I want you to know something, Nathan: There was never a night… (Walks forward.) where I loved it more than I loved you.’

(She looks at him seriously.)

(Haley continues to stare at the wall. Brooke enters from behind and walks to Haley. Haley turns to look at her.)

BROOKE: (About the wall.) Pretty angry, huh?

HALEY: (Turns back.) Yeah. You’d think after three months, this would have gone away.

BROOKE: (Shakes her head.) I don’t think that’s ever going away.

(Haley closes her eyes.)

HALEY: You can probably tell, but Nathan’s not here. He… moved out before he left for camp.

BROOKE: Yeah, I know. I-I’d say ‘welcome back’ but I don’t suppose you’re staying.

HALEY: No, I am.

BROOKE: Oh, well, you might be staying but you’re not staying here, I just rented this place. (Pause) For me.

(Brooke frowns at her and continues on into the apartment. Haley sighs and watches her.)

[INT. BROOKE’S APARTMENT – BROOKE’S BEDROOM – DAY]

(Brooke has put up a board with the title; ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation’. She pins up a picture of her kissing some guy on the cheek. Mouth walks in carrying two large boxes. He is having trouble seeing and breathing.)

BROOKE: (Finishes pinning the picture with her back to him.) How ya feeling, Mouth.

(He doesn’t answer and Brooke gets worried.)

BROOKE: Mouth(!)

(She takes the top box down.)

MOUTH: Um… (Nods) weak. I’m feeling seriously underdeveloped.

(Brooke grins and shrugs.)

BROOKE: Coulda fooled me. I mean, who woulda thought you could move all this stuff in here by yourself, huh? (Smiles and sets the box down.)

MOUTH: Yeah, who knew?

BROOKE: (Laughs) Here. (Holds out a can of Sunkist.)

MOTUH: (Taking it.) Thanks.

(They sit on the bed. Mouth looks at her board with all of the guys she was with over the summer.)

MOUTH: So, are any of these guys the reason you don’t wanna date Lucas?

BROOKE: (Shakes her head.) No. I’d date Lucas, just not exclusively.

MOUTH: So, it’s kinda like with Felix?

BROOKE: God, no(!) (Grins) Felix was a… physical thing. I’d go for some romance with Lucas.

MOUTH: But, you won’t commit to him?

BROOKE: Nah. Too much drama.

(Mouth sighs and looks down.)

MOUTH: I don’t know, Brooke. I felt larger than life when I was with Erica. (Pause) I’d give anything to have that back.

BROOKE: (Shocked) You and Erica broke up?(!)

MOUTH: (Looks away.) Yeah.

BROOKE: Why, what happened?

MOUTH: (Pause) She got popular.

(Brooke looks at him sympathetically and puts her hand on his shoulder.)

BROOKE: See, (Stands) this is exactly what I’m talking about. It is so much better to play the field.

(Mouth nods and looks down again.)

(Mouth looks up and Brooke gestures to the door.)

BROOKE: Come on.

(Mouth stands and walks past her. She pats him on the back and follows him out of the room.)

[INT. BROOKE’S APARTMENT – FRONT DOOR – DAY]

(Peyton walks in carrying two boxes of her own. She sees Mouth and grins.)

PEYTON: Hey, Mouth(!) Nice work(!)

MOUTH: Why’s that?

PEYTON: (Sets the boxes on the counter.) Brooke gets a place of her own; you already got her in the bedroom. (Grins)

BROOKE: Ah, easy on the skanky innuendo.

MOUTH: Ah, I’m gonna get some more stuff.

BROOKE: You could get the couch.

(Brooke is silently delighted.)

MOUTH: (More to himself.) Yeah.

(He starts towards the door and Brooke pushes him on.)

PEYTON: Alright, total reverse déjà vu – I moved all of Nathan crap outta here three months ago.

BROOKE: I know, but this is gonna be so much better because this is our new post-game party palace. All it needs is a P. Sawyer make-over, a little paint; couple of those creepy ‘nobody understands me’ drawings that you do, and a batch of hot boys.

PEYTON: Hence the skanky innuendo. (Grins)

BROOKE: Heh, (not amused) first thing we have to do is cover up Nathan’s hideous ‘pain stain’. (Looks at the pink wall.)

PEYTON: I don’t know. I say you leave it.

(Peyton walks into the shot.)

BROOKE: (Pause as she eyes Peyton.) We can’t leave it(!) Haley’s gonna be here now and then she can’t be looking at that.

PEYTON: Why not? (Shrugs) It’s her fault it’s there.

BROOKE: You and Haley fighting?

PEYTON: That depends on which Haley we’re talking about, Haley Scott; the nice girl that played TRIC, or Haley James; the not so much of a wife that left town and never called - because her, I have a problem with. (Looks at the wall again.)

BROOKE: Do you ever think maybe it just got to be too much for her? (Pause) Like, leaving the whole Chris thing out of it, maybe she just got scared of needing somebody too much.

PEYTON: Needing them so much she just… abandoned them?

BROOKE: OK, you can hate me for saying this, but (Pause) maybe your problem isn’t so much with Haley as it is with Ellie; your returning birth mother.

PEYTON: No, Brooke, my problem is with anybody who just… vanishes and then waltzes back in and expects to be instantly forgiven and your problem is you’re not gonna have anybody to help you paint this place if you don’t stop telling me what my problem is.

(Brooke makes a catty noise and snarls, curling four fingers out like claws.)

PEYTON: (Abashed) Sorry(!) Too angry?

BROOKE: (Amused) Just a smidge(!)

(Peyton smiles and nods.)

PEYTON: (Whispers) Dialling back.

BROOKE: Thank you.

PEYTON: (Turns and walks back.) Um-hm.

(Peyton shifts boxes and Brooke walks to her.)

BROOKE: Look, (Pause) all I’m saying is we both know what it’s like to have your heart broken. (Shrugs) Maybe Haley just needs a little help, whether or not she’s to blame.

(Peyton pauses and they look at each other.)

[EXT. THE RIVERCOURT – DAY]

(Lucas is playing basketball by himself; sweating profusely. He jumps and puts the ball through the hoop. He catches it again and suddenly puts his hand to his chest. He bends forward, finding it hard to breathe.)

[INT. ROE RESIDENCE – LUCAS’ BEDROOM – DAY]

(Lucas tips the tub upside-down; one pill falls out onto his hand – his last HCM pill. He looks up worriedly.)

HALEY: (v.o) Hey,-

[EXT. THE RIVERCOURT – DAY]

(Lucas is still bent forward. Haley walks into the shot behind him, she looks worried.)

HALEY: -are you OK?

LUCAS: (Straightens, breathing hard.) Depends; (Pause) are you home for good?

(He finally turns to look at her.)

HALEY: (Holds her arms out.) Or for bad.

(Lucas smiles and hugs her hard. Haley mumbles happily.)

LUCAS: Ah, good(!)

(She laughs before she makes a grossed-out noise. Lucas lets go and sees he’s covered her in his sweat.)

LUCAS: Oh(!)

(Haley laughs and wipes it off. They look at each other.)

[INT. SAWYER RESIDENCE – PEYTON’S BEDROOM – DAY]

(Peyton is looking through her pictures. On the wall behind her, she has painted the numbers ‘647081’ in red. She looks at another picture and drops it. Finally, she picks up the one she threw on her father’s lap at the cemetery and looks at it.)

[INT. SAWYER RESIDENCE – PEYTON’S BEDROOM – DAY]

(Shot of her picture as it moves along the bedroom to Peyton. Peyton is in her closet, going through her records. She ignores her father as he approaches. He stops before he reaches her.)

LARRY: (Pause) Your mom didn’t sleep for a week when we bought you home. Every cough, every gurgle… she’d be up and have you in her arms immediately.

(Peyton still doesn’t look at him.)

LARRY: One time I… I teased her about it and… she said ‘I’m always gonna be there for her. (Pause) No matter what. She’s gonna know her mother loves her.’

(Peyton finally glances at him before looking away, messing with her records again.)

LARRY: Honey, we were gonna tell you. (She doesn’t believe him.) Together. (Pause) But, when she died,… I guess I didn’t wanna confuse your grief… and… I felt so powerless that I couldn’t protect you from losing her.

(Peyton looks as if she’s about to cry.)

LARRY: You know, I… I look at this drawing and I think… ‘You be mad at me if it helps… but… you leave your mom out of it, because she never lied to you’.

(Peyton looks away, chin quivering.)

LARRY: And she loved you with all her heart (Pause) and this other woman; Ellie… she doesn’t change who your mom was.

(He walks into the closet and puts her picture in front of her.)

LARRY: So don’t you… don’t you dare.

(He walks away.)

[INT. KAREN’S CAFÉ – DINING AREA – DAY]

(The front door opens and Deb enters.)

DEB: (Smiling) Who is the sexy world traveller? (Stops at Karen.)

(Karen turns around and hugs her.)

KAREN: Deb! Oh, it’s so good to see you.

DEB: Hey, welcome back. (They let go.) So, whaddaya think of the place?

(Karen looks around at her dramatically changed café. I has a darker, musicy, theme to it. The camera pans around one side of the room.)

KAREN: Well, Lucas said it was different. It’s… pretty edgy. But I like it and… change is good.

DEB: (Looks at it.) Yeah. (Nods)

KAREN: How’ve you been?

DEB: Well, as you know from my e-mails about Dan, I have been one miserable bitch.

(She takes her bag off and sits at the counter.)

DEB: You?

KAREN: Well, the miserable part.

DEB: Oh, I’m sorry. I guess that means Andy’s not back.

KAREN: Not yet. (Deb nods.) Oh, well we’ll see. Hopefully he’ll be back soon. Have you heard from Keith?

DEB: No, I haven’t. I-I guess you haven’t either?

KAREN: (Shakes her head.) No.

(The front door opens again and this time, it’s Haley and Lucas.)

HALEY: Hey, can a girl get a decent cup of ‘Jo’ around here?

(Ded and Karen turn to look at her.)

KAREN: Oh, (Stands again.) one song per cup(!) Oh, I’ve missed you, kiddo! (She hugs Haley and Deb turns back around, smiling.)

HALEY: I’ve missed you, too.

DEB: I could use a cup of gin, I mean coffee, myself. Karen?

KAREN: Oh, yeah, please. Coffee, not gin. (Turns back to Haley.)

HALEY: (Joking) I’ll have gin. (Laughs)

KAREN: So, what brings you around, Miss Jetsetter?

HALEY: Ah, well, um… considering what they pay the opening act, I… was kind of hoping for a job.

DEB: I asked Haley to come back to the café if it’s OK with you.

KAREN: Oh, of course, we’d love to have a big pop star performing in our hip new café.

HALEY: Actually, I was just kind of hoping to waitress. (Smiles) Like before.

KAREN: Oh. (Looks behind Haley) Table five needs a clean-up. (Throws a rag at her.) Let’s see what you got.

HALEY: I’m on it(!)

KAREN: Alright.

(Haley walks to the table and starts to clean it up. Lucas walks up behind her. She looks up at the piano with the ‘Karen’s Café Open Mic’ sign on it.)

(The café is empty with the exception of Nathan and Haley. Haley sits at the piano playing ‘Elsewhere’ by Sarah McLachlan.)

(Nathan is visible, sitting off to the side as he listens to her.

(Haley is still looking at the piano.)

HALEY: (v.o) # Reaching out and reaching in

LUCAS: Well, we were outta gin so I went with, uh… (Sniffs the liquid.) hm, coffee.

(He gives it to her.)

HALEY: (Laughs) Thank you

HALEY: (v.o) # Holding out holding in

HALEY: You know, um,… I played my first performance right here; just for Nathan. (She smiles and looks back.)

(The song continues to play in the background.)

LUCAS: Have you talked to him since he left for camp?

HALEY: No, he never picked up, so… (Looks at him.) I wrote letters.

[INT. HIGH FLYERS – BASKETBALL COURT – DAY]

(The team play basketball. Nathan jumps and gets the basket and the ball bounces off his head in the process. He smacks hand with fellow team mates in victory.)

[INT. SCOTT RESIDENCE – NATHAN’S BEDROOM – EVENING]

(Haley walks into the room and leans on the doorframe, watching him.)

HALEY: Are you awake?

(Nathan is lying on his back in bed with his eyes open.)

NATHAN: (Pause) Yeah.

(He isn’t even trying to give her an easier time of it.)

HALEY: (Sadly) Hey, talk to me, please.

(She walks into the room.)

NATHAN: I don’t know what to say to you, Haley. (Sighs) Part of me just wants to find the right words to hurt you. (Looks at her.) The same way you hurt me.

HALEY: I am hurting, Nathan.

(He sits up.)

NATHAN: You mean because I made out with Chris? (Pause) Because I turned my back on us and walked away?

(Haley looks at him steadily.)

NATHAN: Oh, wait, that was you.

(He lies back down again. Haley sighs before closing her eyes.)

HALEY: (Whispering, eyes still closed.) Always and forever.

NATHAN: (Caught off-guard.) What?

(Haley looks at him and smiles. She shakes her head.)

HALEY: Nothing.

(She turns around to leave.)

NATHAN: (Struggling) Hales?

HALEY: (Turns back around and walks to him, fast.) Nathan, please, I just…

(She crawls onto the bed, mumbling nonsense. Nathan wraps his arms around her.)

HALEY: …I’m sorry. I’m sorry(!)

(She kisses him and for a moment, he doesn’t resist but he comes to his senses quickly.)

NATHAN: (Breaks it off.) Haley, I can’t do this(!)

(She still tries to push it.)

NATHAN: (Pushing her away.) I’m sorry, you need to go. Alright? (Pause) Please.

(Haley looks down at him for so long that he looks away. She moves back and sits at the foot of the bed.)

HALEY: (Long pause.) I understand… if you don’t love me anymore.

(She sits there for a while, letting the pain show, before getting off the bed and walking back to the door. Nathan sits up again.)

NATHAN: Always and forever.

(She stops and turns around, leaning against the doorframe again.)

NATHAN: That’s what sucks, Haley. I still do love you. (Shakes his head.) I always will.

(Haley puts her hand to her throat and looks at him longingly.)

NATHAN: …I just can’t trust you.

(They look at each other but it hurts too much. Haley looks away finally.)

[INT. SCOTT RESIDENCE – NATHAN’S BEDROOM – DAY]

(Dan is raiding Nathan’s room again. He pulls drawers out and drops them onto the floor. He looks under clothes. Deb walks in holding the envelope.)

DEB: Dan.

(He turns around and sees the envelope.)

DAN: You found the papers. (Holds his hand out for them.)

(Deb hands them over and he opens the envelope. He pulls the papers half out and sees not Nathan and Haley’s name, but his and Deb’s.)

DAN: These are our divorce papers, Deb.

DEB: You’ve recovered (Pause) and so have I… but… our marriage isn’t going to. (She pauses, nervously.) It’s time to end it.

(Dan sits on Nathan’s bed, completely lost.)

DAN: (Quotes) ‘But if he could once return to that certain starting place… and go over it all slowly, perhaps he could find that thing he was missing’.

(He sits and thinks while Deb stands, still uncomfortable.)

DAN: A divorce is fine, Deb.

(Deb smiles slightly, relieved that he gave in so easily. He looks at her.)

DAN: You seem surprised.

(She doesn’t know how to respond.)

DAN: But, I guess, at a certain point, the fire burns out. (He looks down at the papers before standing.) I think I’ll go for a walk.

(He drops the envelope by her and walks out of the door. Deb picks it up and looks at the front.)

[INT. KAREN’S CAFÉ – COUNTER – DAY]

(Haley is back behind the counter. She puts a glass in front of a woman and walks away. Brooke enters the café and walks straight to the counter.)

BROOKE: (Sitting down.) How much for a broken heart with a side of regret?

HALEY: Um… more than you wanna know. (Smiles)

(Brooke nods knowingly.)

BROOKE: Hmm, so when you’re done here, bring your stuff to the apartment.

HALEY: Why?

BROOKE: Because you’re moving in with me.

HALEY: W- (Pause as she smiles disbelievingly.) -Why would you do that?

BROOKE: Because you need a place to live and I need rent money to pay for my new back-to-school wardrobe. So, the way I see it, you move in; I look hot; you don’t get crabs at a shelter. (Smiles) Works for me.

(Brooke walks out of the café. Haley watches her, blinking, mouth agape.)

[EXT. THE RIVERWALK – SEAFRONT – DAY]

(Long shot of Lucas and Peyton walking on the boardwalk with a view of the river.)

LUCAS: So, the whole summer and I still can’t get used to that hair of yours.

PEYTON: What?(!) You did yours last spring and mine (Touches it) actually looks good.

LUCAS: Hey(!) (Points at her sternly.)

PEYTON: Plus… (Shrugs) Ellie had the whole ‘long hair’ thing and I don’t wanna look anything like her.

LUCAS: Yeah, I met her once. (Peyton looks confused.) Before I-I knew who she was… you haven’t heard from her all summer?

(They stop walking and look at each other.)

PEYTON: (Shakes her head.) No, not since I slammed the door in her face.

LUCAS: The… weird e-mails have stopped coming?

PEYTON: (Pause) Yeah. Why?

LUCAS: (Pause) She’s back, Peyton; Ellie. (Pause) I saw her today.

(Peyton looks down, the worry growing again.)

[INT. HIGH FLYERS – CHANGING ROOM – DAY]

(Nathan’s friend walks to him.)

TEAM MATE: Yo, Big Time, we’re gonna see you at that party, right?

NATHAN: (Is in the process of taking his shoes off.) Maybe. We’ll see.

TEAM MATE: Maybe we’ll see? Yeah, aight, but if you don’t show up, I might booty-call that girl that’s sending you that letter, you know.

NATHAN: (Laughs) Alright. (Nods)

TEAM MATE: Alright. (Walks a few steps and then stops.) Hey, yo, Nate?

(Nathan looks up at him.)

TEAM MATE: You can’t get it all back at once, man. Take it slow. Give it some time. (Nathan stares.) Pretty soon, you’ll be back better than ever. (Pause) Alright?

NATHAN: (Serious) Yeah. (Nods)

TEAM MATE: Catch you later.

(His friend exits the changing room. Nathan looks down at the letter; it’s right beside him. He’s opened it. Now he picks it up and reads what Haley wrote.)

(Nathan is holding the annulment papers. He flips the page and sees his signature. Beneath it, where Haley’s supposed to have signed her name, she has written ‘I love you…’. He just looks at it.)

(The camera zooms in on it. He flips the first page back over the words.)

(Nathan sits and thinks.)

[INT. DAVIS SCOTT APARTMENT – FRONT DOOR – DAY]

(The door is open and Haley enters – with two bags and her guitar case. She stops at the wall – Nathan’s ‘pain stain’. Peyton’s drawn a black frame around it and written ‘love’ on the upper frame. There’s a shot of Haley’s face before a close-up of the word ‘love’.)

(Her attention is diverted as Brooke appears. She smiles.)

BROOKE: OK, here’s the deal: I got a room for you but not a lot of pity; you did what you did and it’s done. (Shrugs) take it or leave it.

HALEY: (Smiles) I’ll take it.

BROOKE: (Nods once.) Alright. Come on in, roommate. (Smiles and walks into the room that used to be Haley and Nathan’s.)

(Haley puts her bag further up her shoulder and follows Brooke.)

(Camera pans back to Nathan’s ‘pain stain’.)

[INT. THE CHURCH – CHAPEL – EVENING]

(Dan walks down the main walkway of the church. There’s a birds-eye view of him and then a close-up. He looks around before walking straight to the confessional.)

(He sits down. The priest sits on the other side. Dan’s face is mostly in shadow.)

PRIEST: May the grace of god be with you.

DAN: (Nods, interrupting.) Yeah, OK. (Pause) I gotta tell you, padre, this isn’t exactly my home court, you know. I never had much use for religion. (Pause) I guess what you call kindness, I call weakness. (Nods) But… no man is bullet-proof. I know that. (Pause) After all, they crucified your boy, didn’t they?

PRIEST: What troubles you, my son?

(Dan looks at him, considering the question.)

DAN: What troubles me… is how I’ve made mistakes. (Pause) How I lie awake at night, keeping company with regret… fallibility. I’ve not been the man I intended to be. That troubles me.

PRIEST: And you’ve come seeking absolution?

DAN: (Looks ahead, evilly.) Yeah,… I suppose I have. (Pause) Let me ask you something; is it possible to grant forgiveness for sinful acts yet to be committed?

PRIEST: I’m afraid I don’t understand.

(Dan looks on as he remembers.)

[INT. DAN SCOTT MOTORS – DAN’S OFFICE – EVENING]

(The fire blazes. There is a blurry view of a person standing there, seen from the floor – Dan’s position. The person advances.)

[INT. THE CHURCH – CONFESSIONAL – EVENING]

DAN: It’s simple, really. (Pause) Three months ago, someone tried to kill me.

[INT. DAN SCOTT MOTORS – DAN’S OFFICE – EVENING]

(More different shots of the fire.)

DAN: They drugged me and left me for dead.

(There is another blurry shot of the person’s shoulder as they walk past the camera.)

(Nathan is still in the changing room. It’s empty except for him. Nathan reaches for a paper on top of a shelf.)

(Mouth sits on Brooke’s bed.)

[INT. DAVIS SCOTT APARTMENT – LIVING ROOM – DAY]

(Brooke smiles, welcoming Haley in. Haley follows her.)

PEYTON:  (v.o)  Six billion people in the world,-

FADE TO:

[INT. SAWYER RESIDENCE – PEYTON’S BEDROOM – EVENING]

(Lucas is sitting in Peyton’s chair while she is on the bed. He smiles.)

FADE TO:

[EXT. THE RIVERWALK – SEAFRONT – DAY]

(Peyton looks at Lucas.)

PEYTON:  (v.o)  -six billion souls.

FADE TO:

[INT. SCOTT RESIDENCE – FRONT DOOR – EVENING]

(The door opens to show Haley standing there, looking sad and nervous.)

PEYTON:  (v.o)  And sometimes…

FADE TO:

[INT. HIGH FLYERS – CHANGING ROOM – EVENING]

(Nathan puts his necklace back on – with his wedding ring on it.)

PEYTON:  (v.o)  … All you need is one.

(Camera pans down on the ring hanging on the chain.)

(The camera zooms in on the numbers – to the last number. Everything else fades away into black as the number ‘1’ shines bright; blood red.)
